MIDDLETOWN

Forget about Middletown, Jim said.  This is the real thing.  Oh, no, you don’t.  I didn’t want to get involved in any big-time crime.  I’m not going to prison, I told Jim.  He insisted that this was foolproof and would work.  Come on, Jerry’s driving the getaway vehicle.  You know how fast he can go!  The plan was to break into a new McMansion on Strawnwood Parkway.  The house was already staked out.  There would be a baby-sitter and two small children who would need to be frightened and bound and locked in a closet while we got the stuff out.  I interrupted Jim at that point: Yeah, sure, right.  Like we’re really going to get past a baby-sitter.  Isn’t there any time when there’s no one there?  Can’t you at least find someplace in that hood where there aren’t any kids or anything?  He hesitated, hung his head, and said, No, as a matter of fact, we couldn’t.  OK, no way am I doing this.  Wait!  Jim yelled.  I checked on this girl.  She’s very shy and doesn’t know black belt or anything.  She’s an easy target.  Come on, Lance, you’ve got to do this!  I need you in on this!  Now, he continued, they’ve got one of those state-of-the-art things, I think they call it a Barnett & Pollard home security system.  Before he could say another word, I told him to go screw himself and hung up on him.
